It seems they’ve added an AGENTS.md to one of their Camera branches, I believe in preparation for a rewrite.

Why does adding an AGENTS.md file predicate a rewrite? Its just to provide better context for AI usage.

The branch is also called “compose” likely to mean moving from Java/XML to Kotlin/Compose.

They’ve been working on rewrites for a few apps at this point too, mainly the gallery and messaging app, but also recently the contacts and now possibly the camera app.

This mainly just comes as a surprise to me since I had thought they were against using ai. Partly because of licensing concerns, but maybe I confused that with other devs.

Using AI as a tool is not the same as generating most of content with AI and believing what it generates is all correct. Linking to projects which use AI in a reasonable way is allowed. Promoting AI slop is a different story.

I trust them of all projects to use it responsibly.

One cool implications of AI for privacy is that it allows non-technical people to audit open source software to a greater extent than they could before. Don’t go sending slop prs or issues if you don’t know what you’re doing, obviously, but if it comes back clean you can feel better using tiny open source projects. And it can help you build from source.
