EURACTIV: Commission wants to commercialise open source for sovereignty

the Commission argues that existing EU support efforts for open source projects have had good results – but that supporting research programmes alone is not enough to ensure homegrown open source technologies can successfully scale up.

“Much of the value generated by open-source projects is exploited outside the EU, often benefiting tech giants,” the document laments, mentioning both public and private contracts.

for once, rather good news

I’m in favor of more digital sovereignty for Europe, but it won’t by default be either better or worse for privacy. It all depends on how it’s implemented.

If digital sovereignty is put into practice in a privacy-respecting way, I’m happy to support it. But if it turns out to be a European social media platform that is just as bad as facebook, then we are no better off.
