I recently got my first domain to use for email.
Is it advisable to pay it in advanced for 5 or 10 years (the max)? Or to just renew it each year?
Renew each year. This will give you flexibility to move to another provider should you need to. Don’t lock yourself in.
The length is remaining+1 year if you transfer.
Pay for 10 years, then renew every year starting next year. That way you’ll have 9-10 years at any time. If you want to have some buffer for transfer, do 8 or 9 years instead since some tld and registrar would error out if already got max 10 years and want to transfer. Transferring usually also give another year but since you’ve already got the max 10, their panel crapped out and throw error.
Up to you. If it’s for email, you’ll probably be using it for a while and you could save a bit of money so I would just get the max they offer.
If you didn’t get a .org, .com, or .net domain though, switch to one of those because otherwise you may get caught up in spam filters and price may not be as stable.
I do the same as @cupcake for domains I know I’ll keep forever. It’s also a hedge against inflation, it’s not like domain names are ever going to decrease in price. You can still transfer at any time.
Thanks everyone!
A tip for saving some $$ is via tldes.com and tld-list.com sort by cheapest reg. For the popular tld .com .net .org theres always discount available. Instead of paying $10-15 you probably can get it down to $1-5. Dont worry too much if you end up with shitty registrar if to get the discount because you’re not locked to them, can transfer away after 60 days. Soon will be 30 days after icann proposed policy change.
Also pay attention to that 2 site on December. Usually theres transfer promo too for Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Christmas. Same as reg promo, instead of paying $10-15 you’ll be paying just $1-5. But it usually just for the big 3 the .com .net and .org. My main domain a .me haven’t being lucky to get transfer promo yet.
