Disadvantages of using a remote Monero node

Hi

I‘m quite new in this privacy space so please forgive me if I‘m asking about something that’s common knowledge on this forum.

I‘ve read multiple times, that it’s best to run your own Monero node, but I never understood why that’s the case. In theory, the node operator should only „see“ the IP address and the time of accrss, but never the recipient and the amount of a transaction. That’s basically the same information the ISP also gets if I would run my own node „at home“, so I don‘t really understand the issue.

Thank you very much for your time!

It should be less of an issue with the node banlist becoming popular (I have it running on my node) and using anonymizing networks. Idk if they fixed the malicious nodes choosing already spent outputs.

At the time the video leaked it didn’t seem like a mass surveillance tool, it was for targeted attacks so consider that in your choice.
