Edit: It’s also possible to default to these for certain categories. I’m thinking at the very least General > News and Off Topic could use these. Perhaps General as well.

Since existing posts can be converted, I’ve enabled this as a test in this larger thread too:
I support this it’s especially an improvement on mobile.
It’s good because you can choose which top level replies to engage with so it’s less confusing in some cases.
I would say the only downside I thought of is less people seeing all the posts because you don’t scroll past everything but I don’t really think that’s a problem you can see all the posts anyway.
It just makes it so much easier to digest entire threads because you can filter out the noise and people aren’t having multiple conversations at once
I’m curious what any downsides are if anyone can think of them.
Interestingly I saw people complaining about how it works on mobile on the Discourse announcement thread for this feature, but I haven’t looked yet. Apparently this came out in May, so they might’ve improved it since then.
I really like the ability to collapse replies, so I’m into it. Looking at the Mullvad thread, I think it makes it a bit more navigable.
Downside I suppose is that not all replies will be seen on the main view, but this is probably an upside to a lot of people too:
Is this a bug or just something you did accidentally?
Is this thread type a new discourse feature? If it is or it’s found by others to be buggy then that would be a blocker.
I would not support converting old threads retroactively. Im fine with the example of course, just it could be misleading because sometimes people reply to people without tagging then as a reply. And it’s just those statements were made in that format so it’s kinda like misrepresenting them.
At the same time it could be confusing for old posts to be different.
Reloading the page seems to have put it normal.
Hm, that is strange. I’ve noticed a couple UX quirks too although no bugs like that yet.
Pretty funny to test a change like that to an already chaotic rule-breaking thread but I’m here for it 
. It will also help get lots of peoples opinions.
This annoys me a ton and it’s one of the main reasons I like the idea of using this view. But I agree it would be difficult to convert existing topics because of this.
I mostly meant that I like the architecture more than the current experience. It’s very good but there does seem to be a few quirks and my pixel is getting hot.
Voting in favor of ‘the reddit style’
I think this makes it easier to keep conversations relevant. Threads that evoke emotional debate can often go off on a tangent – one that isn’t necessarily off-topic, but it does flood the thread & make it difficult to find more relevant comments
Collapsible nested comments would resolve that. Folks can debate opsec under one comment, politics under another, and easily navigate between the two
I kind-of hate how I have to keep drifting my eyes further-and-further right. After a certain number of replies, they get hidden and it just reduces the likelihood anyone will actually discuss anything at length. That’s how I feel, anyway. Not a fan.

Do reactions affect sort? Are they all weighed as+1 or - 1 under the hood depending on the reaction? Idk anything about discourse so excuse my ignorance. Maybe it’s the same way as the sorts for posts but I don’t know or care how those work.
What will be the default sort? What should be the default sort?
Does nested replies encourage Reddit-style behavior? We don’t want that (hopefully other people as well as me). This one is a bit tangential but I thought of it because sort on Reddit encourages conformity ime. Would this just not be a problem because of lack of karma and smaller community?
