I do feel the ‘default sort’ should be ‘new’, just so it mimics the current site configuration
Reactions currently are either +1 or +0 depending on which you choose (there are no -1 reactions). I believe Top will sort by reaction scores, which I believe is also how Top is sorted on the homepage, while Hot is some algorithm.
I just assumed it’s customizable as well idek if it is but I assume so.
I love this format. Makes for a much easier time reading for me.
We can change the default. I’m unsure whether New will sort by the thread with the latest reply, or if it will sort by the newest top-level thread

Yeah I do prefer the in-line layout where every comment gets equal presence for readers.
This also disincentives wasteful comments where just commenting “omg this!” wastes everyone’s time by using the same page space as a thoughtful response. I always try to comment something meaningful because everyone will see it.
But I do understand that threads like the Mullvad turn into a nightmare because of the high volume or arguments between users. It makes sense to collapse these sub arguments when they get over a certain count.
I’m torn on it. I really don’t want to mimic Reddit here, but it is probably the cleanest method for huge threads.
We also have the option to default to this per-category. Although it appears like you mostly reply in the categories that I’d probably want to switch this on by default for, so…
Not a big fan, much harder to follow a post as it’s being discussed. I guess it would be easier to follow specific replies but that’s about it. I think people will be less likely to read the whole discussion too since they will probably just read the top comment. Also on my phone it gets pretty bad looking as the replies stack up.
Also if you read part of the discussion it’s harder to come back to it and continue reading since it doesn’t save your place and the latest replies will be split up.
Agree, the UX for this is kinda weird. Gonna leave some feedback with Discourse about this.

I don’t think so. I think only admin/mod can decide on a per-thread basis.
I also noticed this. If I collapse a thread and close the site and reopen it should stay collapsed.
Also it could be nice to not get sucked into deeper pages just because you want to read a deep reply.

I guess it’s good for people finding it through search engines with the top comment, but we already have the solved thing, so it’s a non-issue unless it’s something like the mullvad discussion with no actual answer.
I honestly think it would be best if there was a toggle, but I doubt that will happen.
I like it, but I think it’s more suitable for the Questions category, where you likely generally want the one answer most community members upvote, rather than General or Off Topic where discussions are happening.
I think this reply got messed up because it’s supposed to be nested underneath Defaulting new posts to use nested replies? - #28 by anonymous652 - and I thought it was before, so I wonder why it no longer is now.
Could have been user error because Im on mobile but I thought I replied correctly
