Cindy Cohn - Fighting for Digital Human Rights in “Privacy’s Defender” | The Daily Show

She is a good public speaker. I am not so sure about her opinion that people shouldn’t be responsible for their own privacy and relying on laws. Maybe she just glanced over it because it is a short show. But, you can’t just expect a law to be enough as we see in the EU. Obviously not a bad thing, but not even close to a silver bullet.

I think something that could be more easily regulated is preventing censorship and protecting free speech.

I think you misunderstood her. I believe what she meant is that we need stronger privacy laws and regulations because we cannot fight surveillance on our own. Privacy is a collective problem. You can be the smartest, most privacy conscious person in the world, but if you can’t convince your friends and family to use Signal, your privacy is still compromised.

It’s the same with health. Your health is not exclusively dependent on your actions and genetic makeup. There are many environmental factors that play a role in how healthy you are. This is why public health exists. You have access to clean water because of public health. And public health is done primarily at the macro and community level, in great part through government policy.

Government policy has a huge role to play in protecting our privacy.
