Cheap, privacy-respecting VPS for hosting Pangolin?

I’ve found sites like 1984, OrangeWebsite and FlokiNET. But all these are pretty expensive if you want minimum 2gb ram and 2 vCPUs, which is the recommended spec for hosting Pangolin (I know their minimum spec is 1gb ram and 1 vCPU, but I usually go for the recommended spec for better performance). I’ve also found OVHcloud which is also based in europe, although, it is a french company which might be a bad thing. But the servers lies in countries like Germany and Finland, which is a good thing I think. Is there any other VPS providers you guys know of?

Let’s you pay with Monero and the account is a randomly generated ID. Assuming that is what you are searching.

The only bad thing is that Romania servers go down very often.

If you want privacy-respecting, I would recommend getting a dedicated server, using full disk encryption on it. Its not a perfect solution (they still have physical access), but its somewhat better than using a VPS. At the end of the day, the “cloud” is just someone elses computer.

If it must be a VPS, then avoid companies like vultr, DigitalOcean or NewfoldDigital’s billion subsidiary companies. I’ve gotten questioned about what I was doing when I was literally setting up a video game server. Just avoid companies that are owned by companies like US, UK, because the authorities can probably compel the companies to send over your disk images or RAM dumps (that would contain encryption keys). The companies themselves may not be able to deny the police access, either.

Upon receipt of a valid search warrant, if these pieces of information are available, we can disclose content of customer virtual machines, the content of user communications with customer support, or other forms of content data.

I don’t know how their privacy is, but Oracle Cloud has very generous always free resources and servers. It’s best to upgrade to a pay as you go account, which lowers the risk of getting your free servers taken down. Works great so far.

Would you say that Hetzner is good if I choose the Finnish server? I’ve read a lot of good things from the self host community about it, but how is it privacy–wise?

Hetzner has a bit of a reputation of rejecting accounts and shutting down people’s VPS without offering reasons / much notice. I used it without issue but stopped after a while.

Here are their terms regarding government requests - https://docs.hetzner.com/general/general-terms-and-conditions/data-privacy-faq/#auftragsverarbeitung

What about UpCloud?

Generally those that go to the extreme, no kyc, accepting crypto, accepting registration via tor/vpn wouldn’t be cheap since they’ll be attracting abusers and would need to dedicate substantial resource to hire support staff to deal with them abusers. Orangewebsite and flokinet are exactly those, hence expensive.

Personally i just use oracle free tier to play around with. They do kyc though, by requiring cards at registration so not privacy respecting per se but their free tier quota is very, very generous. You’d be able to run basically anything on their 24gb ram arm ampere instance.

Don’t store important data on those free tier servers. Oracle is known to suspend Free Tier account for no reason.

Of course. I do practice 3-2-1 backup policy.

I’ve been using hetzner for 10 years and have never experienced anything like that. They’ve always let me know when something weird was happening. Like the lastest time they contact me was to let me know “hey all of your ports on your server are open, fix that”.

I use Hetzner and Netcup. best bang for the dollar imo.
