Brave Launches Paid, Bloat-Free "Brave Origin"

I think i prefer the minimal version. None of that i use. I will await till they make a full release, i am not a nightly build person.

A lot of people’d consider it bloat but I kind of like Brave News. Also Tor windows and the Wayback Machine integration. I can also definitely see why Leo or VPN users would like this, but I don’t use those.

There is a Beta Origin available if you’re a Beta build person.

Not a beta person either  but where is that? Others might be interrested.

And yeah none of those i used. I did hook up Leo once with local models but it isnt much in my workflow.

According to this Reddit - Please wait for verification

We’re going to add controls before this hits Release channel on account.brave.com to be able to self-extend the number of activations so you don’t need to reach out to support to do it.

Extending is purely better than revoking. Revoking is not good for privacy, and not optimal for the user because you’d have to link the device to the account.

I acknowledge that having to reach out to support is i) annoying to people, ii) takes extra time, iii) feels less long term to people. And the user should be in control of this. There will be rate limits on the number of resets (extends) on a monthly basis but no one should ever hit that. And if so support is still an option.

I apologize for not seeing this before our Nightly preview of Brave Origin.

I have the Nightly build for Standalone Brave Origin installed on a spare machine, so far it has been pretty good. The only feature i could possibly see missing is SpeedReader.

Side note: You should be able to get Origin (nightly) here Brave Origin Nightly Download | Brave and Beta origin build should be available here Releases ¡ brave/brave-browser ¡ GitHub

Yes that is where I got it :+1:

I hadn’t looked into it yet, but I was wondering how they’d handle this sort of abuse. This is great news, seems like the best way to do it.

I see. Will there be a standalone version for Android? Do you know if there’s any news about that?

According to Brave Origin Nightly Download | Brave

* This will download Origin Nightly as a new, standalone version of the Brave browser app on your desktop device. Downloads are available on Linux, macOS and Windows.

Origin is also available as an upgrade to the existing version of Brave Nightly on your device.

I also did not find any Brave Origin Nightly downloads for android on their GitHub, but it is possible that you could upgrade to origin from an existing Nightly install on Android. Though I can not say for certain.

They gotta do more to justify asking for $60. I’m actually annoyed how expensive this is and getting very little in return.

Can someone clarify what ‘activated up to 10 times across multiple devices’ means? Does this refer to a total of 10 activations lifetime, or a maximum of 10 concurrent devices?

It comes to 6 USD per device for life.

Is it really that expensive?

It means both, from what I can understand and tell.

I was waiting for ladybird browser but tbh, origin matches my specific use case.

I develop on a arm based laptop, always on battery while traveling so I need the least amount of resources being used to preserve battery for a days work. Brave was my most resource intense usage each day. I keep the tabs down, and memory saving mode but still, this may help.

Yesterday I was checking to see if it was available for purchase in the Android Nightly build. However, I will never buy it, and I’ll explain why: it’s not a smart move on the company’s part.
It would have been better to make it donation-based, so the community could support it however they could. Besides, what they’re offering is very basic—literally.

thanks not true, librewolf is just piggybacking off of firefox

I mean yeah? Do you expect us to just magically create a new browser engine in our free time?

So is it available for purchase via android nightly, or did you not even bother checking?

Yes, it works; I tried it yesterday. Then I uninstalled it from the browser.

Yes.

Well, everyone has their limits on what they can or are able to spend.
