I like that Brave does good things and improvements like these but on the other hand also feel icky about it being Chromium and it having what I consider unnecessary bloat like Crypto, Web3, and AI elements.
Wish there was a way to download a “clean” Brave simply as a functional browser, not unnecessarily feature rich.
I kind of low key like this. Hope it has an option to pay for it anonymously but let’s see. Of course, there are pros and cons for this. Some may like it and some may not. Some will be extremely unhappy and question the ethics of it.
As for me, I am for anything that nudges people to Linux.
The icky-ness is mainly for the other things. I like Helium even though it is Chromium but dead simple without any of the crap plaguing other browsers. Brave doing this will kill Helium as a project and a product that may be gaining popularity. I wonder if this is why Brave leadership has decided to make Brave Origin.
Only Tor provides anonymity, not Mullvad. But sure, I see your point.
They’re the same browser, Mulvad is just stripped of Tor Network routing. I try to use Tor when I can, but oftentimes the extra latency comes at a marginal added benefit to Mulvad Browser + VPN
They are not the same browser as Mullvad browser does not inherently work over the Tor network to provide anonymity as you said in your comment.
If it were the same browser, it would be called Tor itself. Why would it have another name from another company? Only tor provides anonymity. So, clubbing Mullvad with Tor and labeling both providing anonymity is incorrect. That’s all I wanted to point out.
The better advice I think is to know what to use when for the purpose for which you’re considering both. Tor doesn’t and cannot work as your daily driver. Mullvad can but even then its a push given its ephemeral nature. Both have distinct use cases depending if you ask me.
Yeah, I still haven’t figured out how to do it. I am unable to follow what I have been told are simple instructions. Its because I don’t know what’s going on or what’s happening at each step and how to ensure I don’t screw it up.
If anyone can write up a guide in an ELI5 style, I’d be very appreciative. I’ve said that before and I’ll say it again.
I think if they’re doing this and that we’re hearing from its leadership here, they ought to have already thought about all that you mentioned. I’m inclined to believe they’re not being myopic here.
