Best surveillance camera outdoor, Expert Recommendations to choose

I researched the best outdoor surveillance camera as I wanted something reliable and easy to use to improve home security. I’ve been concerned about keeping an eye on my driveway and the outside of my house, especially at night and when I’m away. I wanted a camera that offers clear video, dependable motion detection, and doesn’t require too much maintenance or subscription fees.

I went through reviews from trusted sources like Amazon customer reviews, CNET, PCMag, and The New York Times, and after comparing many options these two kept coming up as the top choices:

  • eufy Security Outdoor Camera – Weather-Resistant Outdoor Surveillance Camera with Smart Motion Detection & Local Storage Support

https://www.amazon.com/eufy-Security-eufyCam-Wireless-180-Day/dp/B07W1HKYQK?th=1

  • Arlo Pro 6 Security Camera – Outdoor 2K HDR Camera with Color Night Vision, Smart Alerts & Long Battery Life

https://www.amazon.com/Arlo-Security-Camera-2025-Release/dp/B0FJTQ2K7V?th=1

However, I am having trouble deciding which one would be better for me and I would love to get your expert advice and hoping maybe some homeowners or people who regularly use outdoor security cameras can also share their advice.

I mainly want to monitor my driveway and front yard and need something easy to install, reliable in different weather conditions, and not too complicated to manage. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

If your recording and streaming can all happen locally without the hardware and software needing to connect to the broader internet to function, I don’t think it really matters which one is best. I could be wrong but this is generally the way I have seen people here think about things.

If self hosting doesn’t work out for whatever reason, consider using Apple’s Homekit Secure Video. It’s probably the least bad of the hosted options.

Maybe from Aqara?

I wouldn’t call those “trusted sources” because most of the reviews are probably paid/sponsored by companies having some share in those reviews.

Yes, if you flash the firmware and have basic needs, the quality should not really be a concern overall.
Now, given that you do strip the firmware from eufy and Arlo, not sure it’s worth paying a price premium.

Also, eufy is awful. And Arlo looks just as bad.
Would be interesting to know if you plan on self-hosting, accessing it remotely etc but there is already overall some discussion on the forum that you can look for with the “NVR” keyword.

If you want to do even more research, and you haven’t come across it before, here’s a somewhat recent topic about privacy in security cameras in general (and specifically for beginners, in terms of ease of use). It also includes links within this forum to previous, related threads.

Specifically for your question, I’m a little surprised you didn’t come across something from Ubiquiti. I’ve seen a few independent reviewers point their way for outdoor cameras (in addition to the times they’ve been mentioned here). Or did you come across them but didn’t find them feasible?
