With all the news surrounding GDRP under attack as well as Switzerland taking a potentially dark path, if it does go in a bad direction, what would be the next “best” country in terms of Privacy?
There is no one right answer to this but many wrong answers for sure.
This question is too board to answer for without accounting for the many, many variables when evaluating for this once we first define what’s “best” in the first place.
Generally speaking, the EU and western European countries are believed to typically offer better privacy protection laws. From what I hear, government overreach seems to be a worldwide problem. Determining which country is “best for privacy” is extremely difficult as it’d require tons of research and there are many different metrics by which you can measure a country as being “good” for privacy.
Rumour has it that Iceland is supposedly a decent jurisdiction and it isn’t in the EU so it shouldn’t be affected by any EU overreach, other than that I’m afraid to say I got nothing.
Iceland maybe.
I’m a believer that you should fight for privacy in your country no matter where you are.
If everyone abandons their home country to bad people and bad politicians, eventually no country would be privacy friendly.
First, I think it is important to point out that Switzerland and the EU still have some of the strongest privacy laws worldwide, even with the recent challenges. It is difficult if not impossible to name a single country as the overall best for privacy, since this often depends on the situation, use case and personal values.
In simpler words, just because a country has robust privacy laws for, e.g., banking information does not always mean it offers strong internet privacy laws and vice versa.
Yes, Iceland is often noted for its strict adoption of GDPR and its lack of data retention laws. Being outside the EU’s jurisdiction also adds certain privacy benefits. In my opinion, Iceland lacks real-world court cases, so it’s somehow unclear how it would handle requests for user data. This may be because not many major internet services are based there.
Antarctica or iceland, netherlands, germany
None. Country is just one part of opsec.
