Atomic Mail

Hey everyone, wanted to ask what you think about Atomic Mail? At first glance it looks like an interesting email service that offers more on the free tier than, say, Proton Mail.

Is anyone using it? What can you say about this service?

First impressions are not good.

Not me.

No (open-source) Linux client or web interface.

I counted four with uBlock Origin:

Atomic Mail gave off strong serial entrepreneur vibes, and not in a good way, last time I looked at it. Judging by the sheer number of unrelated businesses associated with the shareholders, I wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole.

Yes. That’s what it sounds like to me too. It is VC funded.

They have a whole page where they compare themselves to Proton:

To me, they are basically Skiff. And we all know what happened to Skiff. Their free tier sounds very promising, but there are parts of it that are, IMO, misleading. Namely, the free 10 aliases they allow you cannot be deleted in the free tier. I don’t like that.

I found out about Atomic Mail earlier this year, and I was going to make a post about it, but I guess you beat me to it, OP. As far as I’m concerned, they have a lot to prove. The simple fact that they are VC funded means they are already compromised as far as I’m concerned. Not that abstaining form VC funding protects you from enshittification, but to me, building your company that way pretty much guarantees it.

I still created an account because I constantly find myself in need of email addresses that don’t require KYC. I have not used my Atomic Mail account yet, but my plans for it are not for everyday use.

It’s not VC-backed. It’s a bootstrapped, one- or two-man operation

Are you 100% sure about that?

If so, my mistake. Thanks for correcting me. My skepticism remains the same though. In my opinion, the 10 aliases they offer should be recyclable. They are also a new company, and after having been burnt by Skiff, I want to have the confidence that they will be here for a while, and that they’re not simply seeking to get bought by a bigger company. Especially if they do well. And if I am not mistaken, companies like Patreon started out with no VC funding, but then accepted and became enshittified. That could still happen with Atomic Mail.
