Hi everyone,
We are French students.
As you may know, the Danish presidency of the EU Council is working to adopt the Chatcontrol 2.0 regulation.
We decided to take some days to write (real) letters to our Ministers, and we encourage you to do so if you live in an EU country.
UE institutions are complex (and we hope we are right in what we are telling you here, feel free to correct us), but it is important to understand that for Chatcontrol to pass, both the UE Council (which is constituted by the ministers of all members states) AND the European Parliament have to agree on a version of the text proposal from the Commission. In the UE council, a little minority may have more chance to change/stop the regulation than a minority in the European Parliament (a blocking minority has to represent at least 35% of the European population in the parliament, while often there ins’t no real percent to achieve to block a validation of the Council), and that’s why we think writing to your Ministers can help fight Chatcontrol.
Of course, asking your MEPs to oppose to the regulation is also critical (We messaged our 81 ones!). You can use websites like https://fightchatcontrol.eu/ to quickly generate mails and get the list of your representant in the European Parliament to send them a mail. If you’re able to print a real letter and send them by post, it may have more impact than an email. Never forget to stay polite, even if we know it can be hard sometimes, and don’t hesitate to source your worries and attach open letters to make them more credible.
Even if you think/know that some of your Ministers will not agree with you, we have to do everything we can to oppose Chatcontrol.
