End of “Chat Control”: EU Parliament Stops Mass Surveillance in Voting

Chat Control was defeated yet again today, by a single vote.

Thank you EU netizens, especially those who contacted and lobbied your representatives. Because of you, a single vote made all the difference.

I hate to sound like a pessimistic dick but I see this as bad news in disguise. The opposition know they’re close. They’ll try again and may win next time.

IIRC this was like the third vote in 6 months. So… they have tried. And failed.

Yeah 1 vote sucks. Better than a loss. EU citizens need to stay vigilant and keep up the pressure

The close vote was on the ammendment, not the rejection of the whole bill, which passed handily.

At the same time, this rejection will give ammunition to Chat Control 2.0 proponents. In fact, I suspect (no evidence to be sure) that this is why most of the EPP - VON Der Leyen’s party and the one that pulled off this weird procedural trick - members voted against the renewal.

This battle won’t end until Chat Control or a future derivative is put into law.
