Apple will end support for Intel Macs next year, macOS 27 will require Apple Silicon

Discontinuing a product is not typically a very happy action. However, a silver lining in this case may be that future Mac editions can be even less afraid to make use of Apple Silicon.

I wonder if this means they will drop Rosetta 2 as well. That would be somewhat bad for Linux containers which they are adding additional support for in macOS 26, so maybe they won’t.

Will be killed for the most part with macOS 28:

Bummer :frowning:

I’m giving a family member an old Intel Mac pretty soon. Learning about this is making me double-think keeping MacOS on it.

Best thing about the Intel Macs was the ability to (effortlessly) virtualize x86 VMs and dual boot with bootcamp. Thankfully, Kali has a Apple Silicon image for my college classes, but it was quite a hassle back when I switched to the M series.

I have been itching to convert the Macbook Air my spouse use to Linux. This will be the moment…

I just hope they don’t kill sypport for m1 anytime soon.

It’s still going to get 3 years of security updates afterward so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
