Hi, I’m looking for a privacy respecting VoiP program to use with voip.ms on MacOS that runs natively on Apple Silicon. MB recommends Linphone, but it requires Rosetta 2, which I’d rather avoid. Ideally it would be able to make and receive calls and send and receive messages. Voicemail access would be a nice bonus.
Are there any other good options? Or should I just bite the bullet and install Rosetta 2?
You have not shared any real reason for avoiding Rosetta 2. Please elaborate.
Some vague desire not to add something to my computer that can’t be removed. Moreso because they’ll inevitably drop support for it and I’ll be stuck with it.
Kind of on the fence.
To me that’s not an issue. But sounds like even you’re unsure of why it’s an issue to you really.
I wouldn’t worry about it. Nothing about it is a bad thing. You’re just hampering yourself if you have such specific concerns.
But you do you.
Rosetta should very much be avoided if possible for attack surface reduction. Rosetta allows you to run code (malicious or non-malicious) that you otherwise would not have been able to run.
Besides, the Apple Silicon platform has been available for 4 years now, there is no excuse for not having developed a native ARM version yet.
OP should get in touch with the developers.
Yeah all that depends on your threat model.
Not really. If you’re installing applications from anywhere other than the App Store then not having Rosetta would benefit you greatly.
