Apple says ‘random or anonymous chat’ apps no longer welcome on the App Store

Seems that there is some policy change for the Apple app store. I feel like this may just be putting into rule what was already true to some extent though.

I’m hoping it’s aimed at anonymous chat being an app feature. You could chat anonymously on signal though through sharing usernames, so a little concerned about that.

It’s referring to those chat apps where you get paired up with a random person not like signal where you chat with people you explicitly choose to chat with. At least that’s how I’m interpreting it, I doubt they’re targeting like Session for example.

The fact that they differentiate it does give me a bit of pause - I would presume chatroulette-style is more in line with the random person chats vs explicitly where they say random or anonymous chat(though they seem to be similarish based on wording?). Could just be the way I’m reading it:

Apps with user-generated content or services that end up being used primarily for pornographic content, Chatroulette-style experiences, random or anonymous chat, objectification of real people (e.g. “hot-or-not” voting), making physical threats, or bullying do not belong on the App Store and may be removed without notice.

I would assume they aren’t explicitly targeting any app, but maybe just to give them cause if they are told to maybe?

Edit: changing from “need to” to “told to”
