Apple applies DRM to all the apps on the App Store

I decided to share this because some people might not be aware of it.

So Apple applies DRM to all of the apps that are on the App Store. For those who hate DRM, this is already wild, but there is a diabolical twist, because of this DRM garbage, Signal, and other apps can’t provide reproducible builds to people who use iOS.

You can read more here: Reproducible builds · Issue #641 · signalapp/Signal-iOS · GitHub

So yeah, if you wanted yet another reason to use Android instead of iOS, then this is it.

This seems like a reduction of a much more complicated process.

What’s the positive outcome of a rather random Apple hating post like this one? You can easily do the same for Android and most other commercial software.

I don’t see how this is hateful.

If you choose to, whereas in this example, you don’t even have a choice.

DRM for packages or for screen recording? Because DRM is typically for media, IMO

For the packages.

Isn’t that the case for .apk packages as well?

I don’t even get how this can be seen as hateful?

But on Android and most other commercial software, including other OS made by Apple, the user has the final say on what software can run on their hardware. In the case of iOS, Apple decides what the user is allowed to run.

Although to be honest, that’s a control and ownership concern more than a privacy one.

What is the reason Apple applies DRM? Hard to have a strong opinion without understanding the reasoning behind it. And aside from non reproducible builds, are there any other issues this produces?
