Hi, all. Nearly all privacy friendly navigation maps are based on the open street map data. I know we can contribute to those maps manually. However, there are many complaints about missing data in some cities. For instance, I came across a few cities where speed limits are non-existent. So, it’s almost impossible to collect and enter that data manually.
I am wondering if there is any way or software that can automatically recognise road signs from camera recordings and convert this data into an appropriate format that can be imported into openstreetmaps.
You can use apps such as Mapillary, KartaView, Mapilio etc… These analyse the surroundings for traffic signs, among other things. Mapillary is still the best. I also like to use it when I’m walking somewhere and realise that there are a few things that need to be entered or checked. Then I open Mapillary and take a few photos.
I believe you still need to import those signs manually into the openstreetmaps. Mapillary is owned by Meta, afaik.
I dont use Mapillary but I would argue it is in a public space so it should be fine if you use an account that isnt associated with a phone that you use?
