Proton now supports purchasing their services via Monero through their recent partnership with proxystore.
Thanks for sharing. I was on this website just a few days ago and somehow missed it, unless this was added today. Either way, great addition finally!
No, Proton doesn’t accept Monero. ProxyStore accepts Monero and sells Proton vouchers.
You can buy an Amazon gift card with Monero on some websites too. That doesn’t mean Amazon accepts Monero!
I was disappointed with the way Proxystore/Proton chose to implement this. If you have used the store before, this is not like other services where credits are added to your account.
Each voucher is a web address. Just open it to create a new account or to upgrade or extend an existing account. Please note that an account cannot be topped up for multiple years in advance.
@LongOblong I have to ask are you affiliated with ProxyStore?
Cause there is no proof of any partnership.
@LongOblong at least for ProtonVPN there is a proof of partnership here: https://xcancel.com/davidgpeterson/status/1965473887120228524#m
Well, it’s good to see Proton finally offering license keys through a third-party reseller.
However, the implementation is a bit of a bummer. Instead of adding credits to your account balance, like they do with Bitcoin payments, these keys are tied to a specific plan. As a long-time Proton customer, I’d be paying more than double of what I’m currently paying for the same plan.
I I hope they still consider implementing native XMR payment soon.
I do think it’s disappointing that Proton doesn’t directly accept Monero like they do with Bitcoin but Tuta accepts Monero the same way Proton does. PrivacyGuides does list Monero as an accepted payment method for Tuta on the recommended providers table so for the sake of consistency it should be listed the same for Proton no?
I am not affiliated with ProxyStore in any way, I just stumbled onto this while I was browsing through the website. I do now realize the word ‘partnership’ seems to be a misleading word to use for describing this as it doesn’t seem to be written anywhere. I will contact Proton/ProxyStore about this.
UPDATE: ProxyStore do say they are an official retailer of Proton on their website
A contributor also brought this up on the GitHub issue tracker, and Jonah raised a good point in response:
Do you have a reference to a(n official) Proton website/source that refers people to ProxyStore? I think we only mention it in Tuta’s case because that is their official recommendation.
If we want to recommend purchasing non-official things from ProxyStore then we would probably need to discuss on the forum whether we should recommend ProxyStore itself in our financial services section.
We mention Tuta’s support for Monero as an anonymous payment method because there is a support page by Tuta about it:
The same is true for SimpleLogin and Cryptomator, i.e., both products have support pages that direct readers to the option of ProxyStore, and we link to both pages below under each recommendation.
SimpleLogin | FAQ (Plan/Pricing questions
Are there other ways to buy SimpleLogin subscriptions?)
I can’t find anything in Proton’s documentation or any blog posts from Proton that announce this partnership. The support page listing the available payment options doesn’t mention ProxyStore at all.
But if you have, as Jonah wrote,
a reference to a(n official) Proton website/source that refers people to ProxyStore
you are welcome to share it here ![]()
@Proton_Team is it official?
Asking on reddit will more likely yield a response. They seldom respond here.
@JG @jerm @redoomed1 So far, I have only found this post by David Peterson (General Manager, VPN) about Monero and ProxyStore: https://xcancel.com/davidgpeterson/status/1965473887120228524#m
edit: and this Nelizea comments on 2025-09-09 Proton voucher codes now on sale at ProxyStore from **Nelizea**Volunteer mod at /r/ProtonVPN

That’s unfortunate. Can’t even get discounts or buy only 1 month for some things
Yes.
Since the official Proton account on the forum confirmed it, I opened a pull request to add this option for both Proton Mail and Proton VPN:
In Progress → Done
