A Day in the Life of an Enshittificator | NORWEGIAN CONSUMER COUNCIL

This ad was made by the Norwegian Consumer Council and released yesterday.
They also published an accompanying article:

I am really proud of Cory Doctorow and how fast and wide his ideas are spreading. More and more people a familiarizing themselves with the term. This is fantastic! It is important to recognize enshittification when we see it, regardless of who is doing it.

I just saw this and rushed here to see if it had been posted here yet. Game-set-match @PurpleDime :person_bowing:. I hadn’t even noticed it was two weeks old. Must just be hitting the US crowds. Edit: I hadn’t even noticed Louis Rossman’s video. Mine came from a friend on LinkedIn.

Anyways, I love seeing this portrayal of culture, scripting, cinematography, linguistics, and comedy to aptly convey what everyone has felt growing around them and feeling hopeless to stop. A simple childish word like enshittification and a simple meme like this goes so much further than giant stacks of policy councils and lobbying will ever do alone.

It starts out by sidestepping the need to go up against corporate lobbyists and appeals to consumers (aka the people “choosing” to buy enshittified products) and making a meme out of the whole practice. One that people can discuss without confusion or wasting words on what the root of modern digital life is. One that enables us to get a simple message of “Boo Enshittification” and now everyone knows what you’re frustrated about and if they don’t know they’ve read or watch this video and unless you’re a billionaire who wants the status quo, be equally frustrated about it and have the exact word to express that frustration.

Lobbying is incredibly valuable work, but it needs an outraged public that make politicians, corporations, and public institutions move their policies towards “boo enshittification” out of fear that they will lose their positions. Because once the public has alignment on the abstract concept put into a simple shared lexicon and a relatable hilarious vehicle to deliver it with, more culture will follow and those who hold power that don’t move to the “boo enshittification” movement will be left behind.

Lobbying is like your body fighting a cold with a fever and culture is like adding antibiotics to the mix. Sharing this anywhere I can.
