Do tell. I don’t see how the UX could be any better.
I was recently semi-annoyed that the bitwarden extensions/apps started showing banners to promote the premium sub. I’ve since started self-hosting VaultWarden (that I sometimes confuse with LinkWarden) to hide the banners and it’s been great.
On iOS Bitwarden worked fine, but I was having lots of issues with the extension on MacOS. Also the Proton Pass UI just subjectively looks better to me which is a matter of taste.
I was paying for the subscription to Bitwarden so no banners for me. But with Proton Unlimited, which I got for the storage space, it meant Pass was effectively free.
I don’t think I have any specific privacy strategy in mind but a lot of what I have planned for this year is going to result in better privacy by proximity. Returning to be chronically offline
The best way to not be tracked online is to not to be dependent on the internet in the first place. I’ve already started off the year doomsday prepping by downloading Ollama and Kiwix to at least get myself accustomed to the idea of not being tethered just to get information. Im also back on my airplane mode by default workflow which makes the phone suck a little bit less as its not screaming for my attention. Since compartmentalization is one of the best security strategies you could ever implement I’m starting to be very skeptical of the all-in-one idea that our modern tech promises. Reviving older dedicated tech, or doing things the old fashion way from time to time just to be a bit more conscious of my time while still embracing the benefits of our modern times is my goal here. Part of this is coming from the fact that I do admire Y2K fashion so inevitably my tech setups adapt accordingly but the way the internet has become last year has just made me want to log off completely
I’m personally not a fan of android based MP3 players even though I will acknowledge that that it’s a happy medium because of all the awesome YouTube Music clients that can let you cache songs for offline listening and if you care about compatibility with Bluetooth devices. However unless there are restrictions within the OEM skin to prevent me from multitasking then this wouldn’t work for my brain and defeat the purpose. If anybody is like me in that aspect then I would personally recommend something like RockBox with either an old restored iPod or the Innioasis Y1
Not a huge connoisseur on this specific topic but I do like the idea of having something offline that just plays local mp3 files without getting into your way.
With wired IEMs or wireless Bluetooth. It’s dumb and only about music, no distractions while also having some physical tactile buttons to play with!
Pretty much like the iPod you’re mentioning just a slightly different design.
2025 was the year I started on my privacy and security journey. I ditched MS365 and Google for Proton and have an Ubuntu laptop I use for browsing and email. I also replaced my old cheap Netgear router with a Ubiquiti setup that allows more control over what I allow on my network. I also replaced streaming/smartTV features with an AppleTV (the least bad option IMO, my family would riot if they didn’t have an easy button for their streaming services).
For 2026, I want to set up a GOS Pixel as a backup phone. I have an iPhone that’s locked down as much as possible, but as I can’t currently get out of that ecosystem, I plan on offloading anything more than mundane stuff already tied to my legal name to the GOS phone once set up.
I also want to set up some anonymous Google accounts with Voice to use for online purchases so I don’t have to give out my primary number.
My gaming and media PC is still W11 Pro. I’m hesitant to redo that setup because it took too long for me to get it just right. Instead, I am continuing to offload personal workloads to the Ubuntu laptop as I’m able and working on getting a Linux VM set up in the event I must use that machine for personal work. I’m thankful for the guides here that walked me through turning off as much invasive crap in W11 as possible.
I mustve somehow navigated to the wrong part of the website because I saw a different device before hand, thats on me. the echo mini looks beautiful actually
For me, this past year, I distro hopped to Secureblue, and have been learning how to use it. I’ve never used atomic distros before, and I’ve had some head scratching moments grokking the system. Definitely a learning curve to develop on an atomic distro. Thankfully, the Secureblue community is pretty nice & has answered questions in good faith, which I appreciate.
I’ve also swapped most of my registrations to using Simplelogin! Still some random outliers I haven’t yet swapped out, but this process made me realize how many online accounts I have. Its also notoriously difficult to delete accounts once you make them, needing to go through privacy controllers in organizations and contact support. Really frustrating there isn’t a “self delete” button.
I’ve also started to heavily use profiles for my browsers. I realize my browsing habits are generally categorized to a relatively finite list, which makes this process nicer (I can stay logged in to certain profiles as I only use them for a singular purpose). I do my anonymous searches on Mullvad Browser, and this setup seems pretty good overall.
This year, I plan on installing arkenfox for my Firefox setups, which I’ve been meaning to do but haven’t got around to it.
Another plan is simply tech mindfulness. I realize I don’t need to look up everything all of the time on my phone, and there is this underlying dependency on smartphones I don’t think is really necessary. I want to use my laptop for online interactions moving forward, and less of my phone, as my laptop is setup in a more privacy respecting manner than my phone.
I realize I’m getting to a point where I’m pretty happy with where I’m at, but I plan to revisit Privacy Guides main documentation to see if there are any reasonable next steps I feel like taking.
Yeah, I just signed up for Tuta email. I had to wait 24 hours for manual approval and another day because they asked me to explain what I wanted the account for.
It was frustrating, but it gave me more confidence in their service.
What also gave me confidence was the fact my prepaid USA only card would not work on their payment system.
Proton?
Immediate access and accepted that same card without issue. Great for convienance, but it is causing me to pause. I only paid for one month to try it. Plus they are a pretty big outfit.
Not saying anything is wrong with them. I will probably just use their services for other websites and services where I am already known. Still thinking on it.
It has nothing to do with the new year, it’s just a coincidence I started earlier this month.
My answer?
Total overhaul!
Graphene OS’d phone
Change all passwords to much better ones on all accounts on line (Been doing this a lot this week)
Learning how to use Hardware keys, authenticator apps, password managers and of course deep dive into linux and ditch Windows.
Have specific devices for web surfing, social media and known identity. Old phones and laptops with linux are perfect for this.
New email providers (Private) and learn about aliasing.
Write everything down for a paper copy of passwords and such.
Delete unnessary accounts or accounts no longer used.
Learn encrypted back up drives with DVD copies. (DVD copies has saved my behind more than once)
Continued education of operating systems, how the internet works, privacy, security and share what I learn and most important, to learn and educate myself and others as I grow.
Probably not an exaustive list, more like a mission statement.
I am just saturated…
There is no need for people to know everything about me or anyone else for that matter and I am just over it.
