I am currently trying to move to mullvad as I read that is the a really good options for security and privacy.
But some features are missing, like for example security keys seems to no be supported via this browser, or some where site are not working properly or not working at all. So when needed I switch to an other browser.
The question is : what is the best options for a second web browser : firefox with privacy guides settings ? firefox with arkenfox settings applyed via the script ? firefox with arkenfox + privacy guides settings ? librewolf ? librewolf with privacy guides settings ? librewolf with arkenfox ? librewolf with arkenfox and privacy guides settings ? Something else ?
Sorry for my bad english for this topic content and for my future replies I could provide, english is not my first language.
All of this depends on your threat model. But since you are asking about it, I’m assuming it is not too high and you just want to be as private and secure as you want without a lot of sacrifices?
Mullvad Browser is for a specific or select use cases and doesn’t really work for all day everyday use.
Firefox with PG recommended settings is what I would recommend with uBO, password manager extension, and sponsorblock add-on at most.
Librewolf is also a good option but not all web elements on all websites will work - so you’ll have to decide what you want to use for what purpose and at what frequency.
Give them all a try and play around to make a decision for yourself.
This is such a low effort comment. I would rather you not even say anything if this is all you have to say.
You seem like you’re new here but please, more details, context, exposition, and rationale is always needed when answering questions or providing advice.
I don’t have a high threat model, I just want to increase my security while browser the web and my privacy, by privacy I mean I don’t want meta, google, website in general, to be able to tack me over my session on internet.
I want a secure way to daily navigate on the internet without GAFAM being able to spy me and sell my data …
I switch from google to proton (for mail and drive), I downloaded a profile from control D for my apple devices, I enable always on my proton vpn to “hide” my ip …
Is webrtc the same things as DNS ? because I already set up control d for my dns on my laptop.
I am already using brave browser on my iphone, so maybe I should switch to brave on my laptop to, to be more consitent if you say that is a good option, even if this one is base on chromium ?
And by the way I use brave search as a search engine, not since a long time but since I started being interested in security and privacy.
Look, Firefox with the recommended settings is fantastic, and so is Mullvad Browser. I would recommend using each browser for different purposes you have identified for yourself.
I couldnt answer that as im not 100% certain, but i do know even with a vpn on. Some sites can see your local ip address and your real ip leaks. So i recommend changing the setting. To turn off WebRTC settings in Brave, navigate to your browser settings, search for “WebRTC”, and under “WebRTC IP Handling Policy”, select "Disable Non-Proxied UDP”
No. Read up on it to learn more. I am not the best person to explain.
Seeing all the quesitons you are asking, I will once again recommend you use all the different browsers with the settings you want and try them out, live with it for a while, see what works for you what the different use cases.
It then becomes a lot easier to decide what you like best for the way you want your set up to be. There is no one size fits all or one answer fits all.
Ok for example, on website that know my identity i could use firefox (with privacy guides settings) (should I use arkenfox ?) and for just web research (cooking recipe for example) I could use mullvad, is that what you mean ?
Ok I see, but for example does using librewolf + privacy guides settings + arkenfox usefull or useless and I should just use native librewolf (if I want to give a try to librewolf for example).
You are overthinking this. Out of the above there are only really 3 choices here.
Firefox w/ Privacy Guides settings (or whatever other setting you want to manually apply)
Firefox w/ Arkenfox template
Librewolf
Librewolf: If you are messing around with Librewolf settings or you are trying to apply Arkenfox to it, you are misunderstanding the use-case for Librewolf (Librewolf = Firefox pre-configured for stronger privacy for those who prefer not to tweak settings themselves or are not confident/comfortable using Arkenfox). Librewolf’s only real positive is its defaults, so if you aren’t going to be sticking with the defaults you can probably rule out Librewolf.
Arkenfox: Arkenfox is a great project, but its knowledge intensive, and best for those with a DIY mindset. If that sounds like you, its probably a good fit. If you don’t prefer that level of control/responsibility then other options will make more sense. (also, as an aside, Arkenfox’s maintainer feels that Mullvad Browser will eventually eliminate the need for Arkenfox, and his attention has been shifting somewhat from Arkenfox to Mullvad & Tor browsers.
Firefox or Brave w/ modest hardening (e.g. the settings PG recommends) – a solid choice for those who just want a pretty private browser without too many usability tradeoffs.
I personally use and very much enjoy Arkenfox, its the right fit for me, but I think Firefox w/ modest hardening or Brave w/ modest hardening is probably the right balance for most casual but privacy conscious users with threat models similar to your own.
Ok I will set this up for my brave browser (privacy guides settings + the settings you just give me) and I will try to use it, for example to watch youtube and to do daily stuff, like banking …
Here’s how I compartmentalize to give you some inspiration:
I use Firefox with select settings as I want them for my everyday browsing.
I use Brave for my continuous learning goals and use case. So, online courses and other things educational.
I use another browser with select settings for my online shopping only.
So, like I said, you need to decide the use case for each use case and need as you want. But you can only decide what and how you want once you have tried them all.
I personally would stay away from Arkenfox for your threat model.
Thank you a lot for your answer man, I think I will keep mullvad (without changing default settings) and try brave and firefox with PG recommendation, and by the time I will “eliminate” some web browser that don’t fit my needs.
And other question, you are all mentioning using multiple web browser, is it bad if I just use one and only one ?
