Unable to find answers to questions about Tails anonymity and usage

Hi there! I’ve had questions about how to stay anonymous on Tails and how to install VeraCrypt on Tails which I asked on The Tor Project Forum nearly a month ago. Only a few days after posting and not receiving answers, I contacted Tails support, but I haven’t heard from them either.

Would anyone here be able to check out those posts and answer my questions? If not, would anyone know where else I can ask? Unfortunately, I need to use Tor while posting these questions so Reddit and the InfoSec Stack Exchange (who both block Tor users) are not options.

The TAILS docs have a page dedicated to Veracrypt, not sure if it answers you questions, but it would be a good place to start if you haven’t already read it.

Also do you have a specific need for Veracrypt, or is your need for encryption more broadly? Is LUKS an option for you?

You might have to enable persistence and enable the additional software feature. Since Tails is based on Debian I believe you can use the Debian package(.deb)
You can also watch Sun Knudsen’s video regarding the installation

@Amusable5830 out of curiosity, why the random unexplained thumbs down?

(if you disagree with something why not just state what it is, seems more constructive)

Doesn’t really help with OPs question when VeraCrypt built in onto Tails is a different one from the official site which has the ability to create encrypted containers or allow FDE on hard drives. The one built in to Tails can only unlock VeraCrypt volumes.

I did read their documentation but unfortunately they don’t cover how users could install VeraCrypt. They just recommend creating VeraCrypt volumes on Windows which is not possible in my situation due to my use case and threat model.

I basically just need an audited open source program that can encrypt files on Tails. I’m not sure if LUKS can be used for specific files, from my memory it can only be used to encrypt things like hard drives or USB flash drives. Cross-platform isn’t 100% necessary but it’d make things a lot easier for me if it were cross-platform.

In my experience on Linux, usually you can just double click a .DEB file to install it on a compatible operating system. On Tails it doesn’t seem to work that way and I haven’t been able on how to install .DEB or .tar.bz2 programs on Tails.

I’ll try it out! It looks unconventional, but since I can’t get any other answers I might just have to go that route. On another note, I haven’t been able to get any direction on remaining anonymous on Tails. If anyone has any recommendations on where else I could ask, do let me know!!

I was able to test Tails on VeraCrypt recently. If it still doesn’t work for you with my previous suggestion, you can follow these instructions. I’m sure it will work for you this time.

  1. Extract/Unzip the Debian Package
  2. Extract/Unzip the “data” zip file
  3. Open these directories (veracrypt-1.26.7-Debian-12-amd64 > data > usr > bin > veracrypt)

The last one is a VeraCrypt executable. I’ve tested and have created an encrypted container on it. However, I haven’t tested on the performance on encrypting a hard drive with Full-Disk Encryption.

from the thread on Tor forum:

My understanding is that if you (for instance) log into Gmail

What you mean by “login”? Login into an account you create with your personal info and real IP? If that is the case logging using Tor is useless because everything you will do using that Gmail account is linked to you, and Google keeps IP logs.

For example, let’s say I log into Google, then restart my identity in Tor Browser, and then log into Reddit. Could Google or Reddit link those two accounts?

Again, is the reddit account created using the same Gmail? if so you are still going to get correlated. Tor browser changes your circuit path every 10 mins or you could press on new identity button to change it anytime you want to.

Stop using Google.

You’re missing the point of the question. The purpose of the question is to determine when and how services can identify you when using a single Tails session. It has nothing inherently to do with Reddit or Google, those were just examples. So to eliminate other factors in that example, let’s just say I managed to create a Google account over Tor using a fake identity and then created the Reddit account with a totally separate anonymous Proton email.
