Umbrel (Server OS)

It’s also incredibly unsecure and doesn’t update the apps as often.

I think this came up before as a different name Start9 Review from Experts? EmbassyOS

I’m not really too keen on “black box” OSes running all manner of containers which I wouldn’t necessarily use. Based on the marketing they assume this is going to rely on something like tailscale to connect.

To me seems like a lot of risk and I’m not really sure who this is for.

I believe that is a different project, but the concerns are probably similar.

Source?

Yes, Start9 is a different project.

I agree. Security wise, it’s probably better to go ahead and install Fedora CoreOS. You will learn a lot more about how to maintain a server and it will also be more secure.

I always strayed away from server OSes like Umbrel, just because I’d rather build my own solution and learn things along the way.

However, if you just want a quick and easy OS to spin up, Yunohost and Cosmos are good security focused alternatives.

I asked about Yunohost and didn’t get a super positive feedback.

Have you tried it?

If someone just want to self host stuff. isnt it better for them to use a ready to go implementation then building they own stuff and probably make lots of security mistakes?
