UK to ban social media for kids under 16, may impose overnight curfews

Ouch. Banning streaming (including game streaming) unless you show ID, stopping anonymous chat (including gaming), and even promising to implement curfew rules, with details coming in July.

It’s starting to be obvious the UK has an issue. Even regular people who don’t get involved or are knowledgeable about such things, get spooked at the word “curfew.”

Honestly the UK Government has long lost its mind

you’d think they show even a tiny slither of remorse but they never did

That would be too generous and humane.

This reminds me of how China imposed youth bans on excessive gaming. It’s a response to growing alienation and malaise among young people that doesn’t really address the root causes of them having to grow up in a materially worse and lonely world.

I agree we need to reign in tech companies that actively gamify their apps to make them more addictive, but even more importantly we have to give young people something to actually do. Doom scrolling was a replacement after we destroyed social venues for people to come together, and I’m not seeing the UK or anybody else trying to give any alternative.

Agreed. But also, banning tiktok-style infinite feed and retention mechanisms could be done universally, it doesn’t have to be age-scopped.

Interesting turn of phrase. Although I’m not sure whether you mean “U.K.” as a population or government. Who / what / how is to “give any alternative”?

If only the UK government put this much energy into fixing its economy and budget; then maybe the kids wouldn’t be so depressed.
