Ubuntu updates question

In Michael Bazzel’s book about Extreme Privacy he states his reasons why he does not use Ubuntu as his OS. One of the reasons is quote “Ubuntu now forces you to create an account if you want all system updates”.

What does that mean? Am i not getting all updates when i am using my Ubuntu without an account?

Yes. That requires Ubuntu Pro, which is free for personal use.

Oh wow! This is really concerning! I thought i was receiving full security updates…
How important are those security updates? I see it is only for packages in the Ubuntu universe repo.

Your post is misleading and… weird.

The book clearly explains why this is not a problem on page 24. I don’t even know why this is even a question or a post here.

You will get almost all security updates on rolling releases. Most others will only ship high and critical severity and maybe some of the medium security ones.

Ubuntu Pro is targeted for those LTS server/desktop installs that does not want to change OS for whatever reason.

The LTS releases usually ends at 5 years. If you don’t want to upgrade for longer, that is what the Ubuntu Pro is for, IIRC.

PG does not recommend LTS releases because not all security fixes get backported to the older version.

It goes beyond that. Some repositories won’t get security updates from canonical without Ubuntu Pro.

Well that sucks…
