Topic timers can be set by moderators and administrators to auto-bump.
The decisions to do this can be because of a number of factors. The most common reason is that a topic is trending, and we believe it could spark a meaningful discussion in our community.
We also auto-bump the livestream Q&A threads before we go live for the This Week In Privacy community.
That is true, but actually in the Announcements > Articles section what @win11.shading291 is referring to is this different setting I recently enabled for that category:

I was going to see if it annoyed people (and maybe it is), but so far I have seen more than a few comments from people saying they liked the reminder or hadn’t read that article originally. Posting our older articles is also doing very well on Mastodon and other socials, so I think I will continue these bumps for now.
To me they serve as a good reminder to read anything one may have missed or share something that may still be relevant. It’s also a reminder to the new members of the community to learn there is a lot of good info on this site.
Thanks! Yes that is exactly it.
I personally use the “last visit” red line to see anything new.
I can barely keep up with all the posts, a bump makes things even more overwhelming.
It should be fine unless there is significant community push back. Right now I dont think there is a lot.
I just use @jonah’s advice to bring back “new” and “unread”
