I understand that the phrase ‘the Tor network is a honeypot’ can be frustrating for many, but I have recently encountered significant evidence supporting this assertion. What are your thoughts on it?"

Tor-BBG Correspondence for the documents

Tor is perfectly safe to use. Please don’t think or believe otherwise.

The actual Tor-BBG correspondence you are looking at does not imply anything that we don’t already know.

Even with the message stating that Tor was in communication with the White House, State Department etc, it’s seems like they were only really just introducing their tool and clarifying the positives of having the Tor network. Given that they were in the early stages of building the Tor Network around this time, it is obvious that they may be asked questions about its national security implications. In the context of the message, I believe the BBG was just asking about their talking points in response to the usual claims that it hosts criminals.

Tor is not a honey pot. And the BBG is not an extension of the CIA. They’re just an underfunded state media division (think VOA) that was recently cut further by the Trump Administration. The journalist who made the FOIA request seems to be looking for facts that confirm their already held beliefs rather than actually viewing them objectively.

How can we get more involved in digital rights and privacy advocacy beyond using open-source alternatives and supporting privacy-oriented developers financially?

Spreading awareness. Advocating for it with friends and family. Educating the ones you know IRL and the ones you don’t by discussing things online about all that we value in this realm.

Many ways to get involved.

I haven’t been updating it as much as I want as I’m working on another guide which should be ready in the next 3 months. Then I’ll get back to it. Please do contribute ideas there if you feel like it.
