I’ve decided to get the Fairphone 6 and I’m interested & curious in how /e/OS will be as a daily driver

edit: I personally like the idea behind the phones repairability its a very niche group of us for this type of the device, but I can see support taking a hit for the US at least for a while and I agree with the points you both made about Murena/Fairphone.

Thanks for watching

At least with the Fairphone 6 you can flash the device to whichever operating system you desire, so if you don’t end up liking /e/OS you could switch it to CalyxOS.

I also like the idea of a repairable and sustainable smartphone I just wish they were on par in terms of security

Do yourself a favor and stay away from /e/OS. Fairphone is also not the best choice. There is no secure element and updates have had significant delays. Google Pixel with GrapheneOS is the only recommended choice. There is enough information on the forum about any of these.

There are different threat models. Some people don’t need the most secure device possible. Almost no one uses the most secure devices, and yet nothing bad is happening to them. No identity theft, no money taken from bank accounts, no remote access, etc. Reasonably secure device that it not Pixel/GOS if perfectly fine

I’ll keep that in mind, but I’m honestly more intrigued in the hardware itself than the software a problem I wish I would rather not have tbh.

But /e/OS is not reasonably secure.

It’s not possible to watch youtube anonymously anymore. Is this published on any privacy-friendly platforms?

it still works, just click the new circuit button a few times.

I’m assuming because you mentioned “new circuit” you mean watch in tor browser at youtube.com? I have a couple issues with that:

  1. in my experience there’s too much latency to stream video over tor
  2. While I know that TB offers best-in-class anti-fingerprinting measures, I don’t think anyone claims they are perfect, and it seems like a rather large leap of faith to assume you can enable javascript and the other features needed to play media on Youtube without being fingerprinted.

Anonymity aside, it would be still be preferable to watch on an ethical and trustworthy platform.

the concept of fairphone is pretty neat actually, and the phones are not bad for most users I think. From a privacy (/security) perspective, you’re right of course, but not everyone is a hardcore privacy nerd and digital civil rights hardliner like most of us here are :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:. I know a lot of people that even if you would explain it to them, they don’t understand the long term consequences of massive intrusive data collection etc. - they want a phone that makes good or okay-ish photos and is capable of running whatsapp. And in these cases, why not a fairphone over a big coorp phone like google or samsung.

It was published on PeerTube after the stream finished, we are hoping to also stream live on PeerTube too but not sure if that will be possible.
