PG recommends way too many Linux distros on Desktop/PC OS recommendations page Currently it’s 10 OSes, which risks causing overchoice (wiki) (wikiless) - meaning excessive amount of options causes overwhelm. If I were to suggest changes: Remove: Arch, OpenSuse, NixOS, Kicksecure, Qubes, Tails, Wh…

I think it is correct this is a non-actionable suggestion, because removing distros should be on a case-by-case basis like any other recommendation. As such I will close this thread as invalid . What we should see is: Threads dedicated to removing a specific distro, with a reason why that one isn’t…

I reject the premise that the variety of options currently recommended is a problem [image] anonymous685: Currently it’s 10 OSes, which risks causing overchoice As things are written today, there are not 10 equal OS recommendations for users to meander through; there are four subcategories, …

I agree that removing Arch, NixOS, openSUSE, and Fedora Atomic would clean up the section nicely but I disagree with removing pretty much anything else. [image] anonymous685: Qubes OS, Tails, Whonix - don’t work for most use cases, extremely annoying to use. Highly targeted individuals shouldn…

I’m for removing openSUSE, Kicksecure, and Arch—they aren’t needed in the recommendations. But the rest doesn’t make sense. Removing them because it’s complicated and you might get confused? How about spending a couple of minutes reading and learning something? Especially since the use cases are wel…

[image] fria: I think we should make the case for each OS individually, This. This thread should be closed. If people want a specific OS removed a thread for that OS should be opened.

Did you really want the OP to make 8 threads? I don’t think closing this is necessary. I think the guide is or more or less good as it is, anyway. It’s broken up into sections already. It’s the subject matter itself that’s confusing, namely all the different linux distributions that exist, but that…

[image] trilobyte: Did you really want the OP to make 8 threads? I don’t think closing this is necessary. Yes. Look through the history of how these discussions are done. That is the way. Having one thread with discussions of 8 seperate OS is way more chaotic and harder to parse what the com…

Those were 4 unrelated applications, whereas the OP is suggesting the criteria for a page be changed to be more selective. These situations are not the same. Also, too much information can really be overwhelming and cause more harm than good. The current list involves 10 out of over 600 distributio…

Agree. Fedora KDE seems to be the only one worth mentioning for practical everyday use, and secureblue for hardened usage. However, it seems fine to leave Qubes/Tails/Whonix listed as a highly specialized case, not for general everyday use.

This, I agree with - sort the Linux section by tiers and explicitly mark them by comfort with use and technical knowledge needed. Just a text box “this is best for beginners” kind of doesn’t really explain why in a way there someone coming from Windows will understand. Not all Linux distros are the …

You have completely missed the point. The subject matter of the thread is irrelevant. The point is that there should only be one suggestion per thread. Not four, not eight, just one.

Also, OP was clearly not suggesting a criteria change.

And yet you want a thread with eight seperate discussions going on…

A few more examples as I am worried you are getting to caught up in the one example I have mentioned.
