SimpleX is really cool I like what they’re doing. @maqp
a company doing a web3 grift is never a good sign imo. how are people still doing this in 2025-2026
If you watch the talk you can see it’s not a grift or particularly about cryptocurrency.
They need to fund themselves and the infrastructure somehow
yes but there are more ethical ways to do it. I also doubt how profitable this is going to be for them.
What’s unethical about their plan?
because to me at least this seems more like a nothing burger that was made just to slap more crypto and blockchain on it. their vc backing is also a bit concerning.
Why is it unethical and what would you do in their place to fund them?
I think they could also just accept Bitcoin/Monero for usage fees, then its not another crypto currency
I guess anything is better than nothing, but I struggle to see why they wouldn’t just incorporate Monero, rather than a new coin. Not having smart contracts seems almost irrelevant. Each provider could just have a wallet address.
I also do not foresee this providing a meaningful amount of funding. There has to be something of value gained, like cosmetics or something.
Maybe I’m wrong, I hope it works out. The project lead being a climate-denier still leads me not to trust that they are capable of rationally leading the project.
They mentioned they might add Monero in the SimpleX users group:
I want to make a poll - should SimpleX add a wallet for XMR/BTC/ETH?
We could certainly make a better one by building it based on payment coordination protocol in chat, so that:
- the concept of blockchain address disappears from UX - you are just paying a person. To pay out? You will have to use the address or to scan QR code.
- there will be many adresses derived from one seed in the profile (and each profile could have different seed) - one per contact, or even one per payment.
- XMR wallet won’t have to scan the chain, as it would receive the payment note, and it would just have to verify it via hidden chatbot-based service layer (which is being added anyway for other things) - all verifications would be separate requests, unlinkable - we may extend SMP to work for this RPC pattern without establishing long-lived connections.
So like properly private wallet, not fake privacy when it all goes via a single centralized RPC layer
Obviously non-custodial, but you know it, right.
Just a braindump.

Good stuff! Thank you for sharing that.
The only reason I see xould be confirmation times.
For such microtransactions it would be better to use Lightning/Cashu
