Signal Polls: Yes, no, maybe (yes!)

poll responses are not anonymous and anyone can see who has voted for which option in a poll. Stand proudly in your choices and preferences

It means activist campaign working groups still have to rely on other platform for voting. Anonymous voting is crucial.

I consider Signal groups as small circles of friends. I don’t treat is a social media, but a way to communicate privately. Therefore I don’t care if polls are anonymous or not. I would know anyway. I don’t think Signal should try to be Telegram with a ton of feature.

Privacy and Security.. maybe a few stickers. That’s all I want from it and it delivers. Love it.

I guess there’s also the challenge of how to actually make the polls anonymous. Signal being security focused can’t just not show it in the UI and call it a day. And since groups aren’t managed in a centralised unencrypted form, they can’t use their server to manage the poll and simply send poll results. They’d need to find a way for each client app to receive the votes in a way where the app doesn’t know who the vote comes from but it’s definitely the only time that that group participant has casted their vote. Sounds like a really hard problem to solve without either the app being able to know who has voted what or the server being able to know that a poll exists and who has voted in that poll.
