I have a VPS with a static IPv4 address from a certain cloud service provider. I run WireGuard on the VPS and have used it multiple times on both my phone and PC, both of which are logged into my Google account. Because of this, I assume Google has associated this IP address with my account.
Recently, I started using LibreTube on my phone, but the Piped instances always return an error. As a result, I had to disable the Piped proxy and enable local stream extraction instead.
Now, I’m considering hosting my own Piped instance on my VPS. However, I’m wondering if it’s worth doing so, given that Google already has the IP associated with my account. Alternatively, should I just keep my phone connected to a different VPN 24/7 and use LibreTube that way?
I’m in an almost identical situation - I wish to use libretube on my phone but the public instances fail constantly. Will hosting an instance on a vps hold any privacy benefit over connecting to youtube without a proxied instance?
For me, I started out w/ piped and then also moved towards self-hosting for less disruptions.
Personally, I use Invidious as it’s more popular re: self-hosting, and has a solid 3rd party app (I believe you can use the newpipe app as well fyi). They do have an option to use a proxy w/ a self-hosted instance FYI, so that might be an option if you have a local server you want to use instead.
