Secure Offline Password Files

Hello all! I am looking to see if there is a way for me to create some form of text document, and then encrypt that document with a password, so that i can store all my passwords on this central encrypted document, while being able to access this document through said password if i ever forget a password and need to check what it was.

Firstly, is this possible? and if so, what type of text document would i use/what sort of program would i use to encrypt a document?

Additionally, are there any flaws in this method of password storage that are immediately apparent? If i understand encryption properly, then i believe it should be possible to encrypt a file, put a password on it, and so long as the encryption method and password chosen are both high quality, then this should be able to provide a secure vault for my passwords correct? Plus, one of the main reasons i would be interested in this, is that it would keep my passwords fairly offline. My first line of defense would be someone physically accesses the device such a file is stored on, or having remote access to the files on my device. But even then, that’s why i was interested in looking into encryption, so that if i am misfortune enough to have someone have access to such file, it would be difficult to open it without the password. This would hopefully provide me with a secure vault for my passwords, that i can still access anytime i need, so long as i remember my ‘master password.’

Disclaimer: I am aware other services exist that are similar to this. I am not really interested in a password manager service. Nor do i want any service that auto-fills passwords. I am not interested in paying a subscription.

There is literally no reason or situation where this is necessary and why you would not be using a password manager instead. Its literally going to solve the same problem and be better at it.

Yes, it is possible. But please use a password manager instead (not LastPass or Dashlane; Proton Pass and 1Password are solid recommendations).

This is not good opsec. Plus you should have strong and unique passwords for each account. Password managers provide this feature and do many other things too.

Then use KeePassXC. But use a password manager nonetheless.

 No idea why because you did not explain it. But you can easily use Bitwarden for free or KeePassXC for free without paying for it.

The way you seem to want to have it is just bad opsec if you ask me. It’s a bad idea. But if you want to make that mistake, I recommend using Cryptomator for encrypting any file you want. Even text files.

Good luck! /s
