So my problem is that i can’t run session in tails, it’s obviously because firewall is blocking it, but i dont want to change things in firewall or other ways by terminal… What would you suggest to do, maybe other pretty safe places to use that app, maybe VM in android second space/profile or VM in pc or other better ways if you know? It would be good if it would have simmilar enviorment as tails or at least easy to delete data after use (if i would want to download anything from app)
It depends what you mean by “safe places”. Tails is meant to provide protection by specifically focusing on anonymity and counter-forensics rather than prioritizing protection against malware or system exploitation. Whereas something like QubesOS is much better suited to protect against system compromise, I don’t think it’s amnesiac like Tails. (At least not with how it’s usually meant to be used.)
Running Session within a virtual machine might be useful if you’re concerned about being attacked on Session, such as by being sent malware via Session. But it’d only provide little to no benefit in further protecting your anonymity. If anonymity and counter-forensics is a priority, you’re better off switching to something that’ll work within Tails or maybe even Whonix. If using Session without leaving a trace is a must, I suppose you could research how to exclude it from Tor within Tails, but as you know that might be difficult and risky if you don’t know what you’re doing.
I’ll also warn you that Session was removed as a recommendation, so it isn’t an ideal option to begin with. People seem to consider SimpleX Chat the best alternative. I know people have got it to work on Tails but it’s unclear to me which exact steps you should follow to get it working with persistence. I’m sure if you join their community someone there will be able to help.
Thanks, yes i’m using simplex too and it works fine in tails, but a lot of people still uses session and it still looks pretty good compared to other messengers (not counting simplex/signal), so at least i’m trying to do it best possible way
Yeah that’s totally fair if you have contacts on Session who haven’t moved over. It’s too bad there’s not a great solution to this problem on Tails.
Out of interest in helping another user who was asking, do you know which steps you followed in order to get SimpleX Chat working with persistence on Tails?
I use Delta Chat on TAILS. Primarily because I have a wider group of contacts than for Session.
Delta Chat installs and works fine with Persistent Storage too.
You must, however, change the settings to use a SOCKS5 proxy rather than the default DC option.
