Routers recommendations for FOSS firmware

It’d be great to for example have sections for let’s say routers that are mobile and home routers but also for home sizes, amount of ports needed, extra features etc. etc.

It took me quite a bit of time to find a good one (really eyeing the Asus RT-AX59U). I think having these recommendations on Privacy Guides would really speed up the process for others. PG definitely helped me with the Pixel phones buying decision.

P.S: Perhaps a country of origin could also be noted. I’m not sure if a widespread (at least in my country) use of TP-Link which is Chinese is good or bad or something to be wary of.

I think this is out of scope for PG, it would take a lot of work to maintain (and potentiay test?) IMO and there are other sites that do this.

This should help you:

It is currently out of scope but I believe it should be included because of the open source goodness of it, and better privacy and security.

It is hard to audit if some sort of consumer telemetry is being sent out by the router back to HQ and OpenWRT helps alleviate that worry.

from what i’ve heard/read, the GL.iNet Flint 2 seems like a great option

recommended router heavily depends on the usecase and requirement (port amount, usb ports, , budget, etc). I don’t think it’s within the scope of PG, as the consideration is not related to privacy/security (except on whether or not it supports OpenWRT)

I live in a small place and the GL-MT3000 do a great job.

I have to agree this is way out of scope for PG. OpenWRT supports hundreds of routers. Ideally, OpenWRT would just do a much better job of answering this question on their own wiki.

I have one and I’m supper happy. Works like a charm, their UI on top of OpenWRT is very user friendly and has many useful features, if you want you can still manage it like an OpenWRT router, you can even easily install OpenWRT if you prefer to avoid their fork. Performance, reach and stability are excellent. It has so much idle CPU and unused memory with the kind of load that I need that I’m considering running some services in it a d use it as a home server too
