Are there banks that offer checking account with virtual cards like Revolut in the US? I’m only aware of Credit Card offerings and Wise or Pay Pal.

For Europeans there is the N26 but I don’t know if it is any better than the Revolut.

Edit: ok I found one called Chime. Please let me know if there are more.

It’s not pointless. You can use fake names on merchants, and it usually works even though most sites use 3DS.

You’re still hiding your card number from the merchant, which increases your privacy and prevents them from taking money out without authorisation. You can also freeze or delete the card.

In France all the main banks provide with their app the ability to create virtual cards. Is there any advantages using Revolut over another bank regarding privacy ?

Agreed. This has been my experience as well. I’ve used everything from “Scrooge McDuck” to “customer” in place of the cardholder’s name across dozens of cards from various European brick-and-mortar banks, neo-banks, and non-banks, such as Wise. I’ve never been refused service or a refund. If you pair it with a postal locker or a similar option available locally, it’s one of the best privacy hacks out there. You can use your existing plastic or, if your bank provides them, virtual one-time or multiuse cards, which are typically better because they haven’t been used anywhere before.

Other than the number of virtual cards they might allow you to maintain at the same time, I don’t see what’s so special about Revolut. It’s an additional party to trust, and a pretty dubious one at that.

My threat model is random merchants, not banks or card networks, so your mileage may vary.
