Anyone had any luck transferring conversation history from Molly to Signal? None of the linking och restore from backup options seem to be working for me.
No luck, which was incredibly frustrating and really cemented my decision to change permanently.
Molly had the obligation to, at least, be compatible with upstream Signal, and backups are a part of that. And that goes double for a supposedly security-focused project.
Instead it did a fake backup, pretended all was good, and when I tried to restore to signal it didn’t work. I lost everything, they lost my trust along with it.
The problem here is that we don’t know that, do we?
- Tomorrow marks 1 month since the last response on Fosstodon.
- “git-carrier” hasn’t been touched in 3 weeks.
- His entire GitHub account has no activity whatsoever since 8/10.
- No Pull Requests have been closed or merged for ages.
What the hell is he up to? Is he working hard at fixing it? Is he close to backporting a new update?
Starting to smell like abandonware here.
I agree with this. But consistency can’t be validated in a week or two timeline. Consistency is precisely a longer term measurement. If people believe that after new thing X its solved for, that can’t be confidently affirmed after seeing it work for a few days.
For stripping Molly? I’d say at least users must be aware of risk of not getting patches in a timely manner, and certain threat models should carefully evaluate their tolerance to lagged updates.
That’s a shame. I also want to switch but don’t want to lose my conversions. Guess I’ll have to wait for them to update and hopefully then it will be compatible.

I have always been able to switch from Molly back to Signal using an on device backup. Sometimes I’ve had to try it twice, but it’s always worked eventually.
I got it to work now. There was a prompt in Molly that I didn’t see at first to switch to a different kind of backup. After doing that it worked as expected.
According to Nuttso, he’s working on merge conflicts: link
Git-carrier wasn’t being publicly worked on until after it was announced. Before then it was entirely private, no activity on github doesn’t mean no work is being done, take a look at ReFra for example.
I’m not someone involved at all or represent MollyIM, but I’ve heard from people that have at least more direct communication with Valldrac that he was working on an update. Which has been taking longer than usual because of the setting refactorings Signal did.
Even before the break I think this was somewhat the case as shown by the outdated readme. (Edit: I could be entirely wrong about this.)

When someone who has never contributed a single thing to this project, who has absolutely zero technical understanding, comes along and attacks me, my friends, and ultimately our entire project, despite everyone knowing perfectly well how limited our resources are, that’s where my patience runs out…
We’re investing our own time, money, knowledge, and energy into building something that goes far beyond simply modifying Signal. We’re trying to push security and privacy further, despite having extremely limited resources.
And after all of that, I have to come here and read complaints from people who are unhappy because their fucking stickers aren’t displaying properly like in the latest Signal update?
Seriously?
Leave me the hell alone.
I have to admit, I occasionally question my goal of getting good enough at programming to contribute to open source. Maybe this is all that awaits me and I’d be better doing some menial task for a nonprofit 5 hours per week.
Though maybe this instead only happens if you interact with the public and the happy devs are the ones we don’t hear from.

Keyword here is “was”. For all we know, he’s no longer doing so. Has anyone actually heard from him? Or claimed to have heard from him?
Even if he was working on it in a private profile we’d see some form of activity on his GitHub profile. Him “merging upstream” doesn’t seem to indicate any progress being made, because according the Git repo he’s done several of those. Might be automated for all we know, which would explain why no commits are being shown on his profile.
The simple reality is that we don’t know what’s happening. For whatever reason he’s not bothering giving an update, and instead we have to rely on responses from other users that don’t even seem to be working on the project. I find that odd.
That is correct, as far as I know it’s automated, do not use upstream as an indicator of activity from Valldrac.
I was talking about what I heard from a Mod in the Molly Matrix room, but there’s also this on the GOS forum from someone that’s a mod in the Matrix room.

Yes, I mentioned the “merging upstream” commits. Since those merges are (seemingly) automated there is no way to tell if he’s doing any work in the repo that Nuttso linked to or not. Hence why Valldrac’s profile links 0 commits since 8/10.
Nuttso does not, as far as I can see, claim to have spoken with Valldrac lately which leaves the question ambigious whether he knows that Valldrac is currently working on it, or if Valldrac told him this a month ago and then disappeared.
I replied about this already.
Valldrac didn’t have any activity to show he could be working on git-carrier before it was announced.
I was talking about 2 different mods. Both now have said that Valldrac is working on another release and it’s taking so long because of merge conflicts.
Valldrac didn’t have any activity to show he could be working on git-carrier before it was announced.
But again the key word here is “could”. We don’t actually know if he’s working on it because last he said so was a month ago, and he’s showing no actual signs of working on it since. With 0 commits on his profile it could be that he’s putting everything into 1 monster commit. This would strike me as odd since he’s pushed up smaller commits so far:
Or it could be that he’s not working on it at all. We simply have no way of knowing aside from what two mods have said, with neither of them being developers apparently.
I think I’ll make the switch to Signal, it’s been long enough.
