I’m looking for a smart scale that can measure several metrics, but all the once iv’e seen either require you to use an app without an option to use it offline, like RENPHO.
They are good, but it is no longer being updated, so if a new product comes out it won’t be tested/listed. The existing info should still generally be valid though.
PG recommends Gadgetbridge and the only scale that’s compatible is Xiaomi Smart Scale 2. So you’re limited to one option if you’re concerned with privacy. Otherwise, is there a reason you need a smart scale?
I might be mixing terms here. But what I see as a “smart scale” is a scale that can measure more than my weight, like inner and outer body fat, metabolic age, etc.
It would be nice to have some sort of integration with privacy respecting software that will show how those metrics change over time.
So while the app side is a nice bonus, I’m willing to compromise and even manually input the data every time. But I would still would like to have the dashboards and graphs nicely showing progress for me without too much effort, it doesn’t have to be even a mobile app, can be a Linux desktop app too.
As said, there seems to only be one option. But as an app (and I have only been using it recently), GadgetBridge seems to be better for tracking and monitoring. I’m not sure about inputting data like body fat. You may have to do that manually on a spreadsheet if you’re prepared to do that.
On the website, they support body weight measurement. I’m not sure if that’s overall weight or if it includes body mass, but you should expect that the app may not work the way you want it to work compare to their vendor app.
In my case I’m using trale. Its local only no internet weight stat app. It does not connect to scale, and is much easier to use and view if someone don’t needs fancy stuff.
@yipii Yes I have seen that, thank you. The challenge will be finding a compatible scale. The project is going under a complete rewrite, so I will wait to see how it goes. I guess I can always buy a scale and just never connect it to anything if the project will not support it in the newer version
I have used openscale for a long time, and I just input the values manually. It’s a tiny effort that goes unnoticed, really, and that means that you can use it with any scale. I’ve thought about eventually buying a scale that works with it, but I haven’t bothered so far.
It’s a great app, and it works completely offline. You can export the data into a CSV file and process it further if you want.
Although it doesn’t directly answer that, there are scales without an internet connection that measure more then weight. Like Body fat, water %, muscle mass %, etc. Look it up online if this can help.
If you want a simple / official solution (for example because you’re an iOS user and can’t use Gadgetbridge) I can recommend beurer scales. Their app works without an account, in which case it doesn’t transmit any data at all according to the privacy policy. The UX is pretty stupid, you have to click “Log In” (or was it “Register” maybe? I don’t remember, just that it’s confusing) then select local account and still fill the register form (despite it not registering anything anywhere) but it works just fine after that.
Just a reminder: Bluetooth devices have a unique MAC address which can and will be used for tracking by most smartphones.
When either Bluetooth or Bluetooth scanning is enabled, a report containing a list of nearby Bluetooth beacons is sent to Google any time an app refreshes Android location services. The only way to prevent Google’s Location History from sending this data back to Google, Quartz found, is to turn off both Bluetooth and Bluetooth scanning—eliminating access to Bluetooth devices—or to turn off Location History, crippling certain features of Android and Google apps.
