I currently only use proton vpn but I also want to use their encrypted DNS alongside the VPN. What is their DNS address and where can I find it elsewhere online if it changes?
ask proton for that
You are definitely using their DNS if you use their VPN…
I use Protonvpn and I’m fairly certain their DNS is the default unless I change it.
For extra protection, turn on Netshield for blocking of ads, trackers and malware.
Yes but lets say for instance that I want to turn off the VPN to access a certain website. In a case like that, I want to use their DNS or does using their DNS will still prevent me from accessing that same website?
What encrypted DNS? They don’t have any like Mullvad does. Also why use their so called “encrypted” DNS? You are basically just encrypted your DNS traffic twice for no good reason.
Okay, I see that the DNS is basically the same as using the VPN itself, thanks for the response.
It is not.
Please take a look here
And here
I was specifically referring to proton. I know that overall vpns and DNS are different.
This doesnt make sense to me. How exactly would one "encrypt your DNS twice’?
My understanding is that when you use ProtonVPN, each VPN server has its own local DNS server that every client uses when you use ProtonVPN. DNS requests are typically routed through the VPN server, meaning they are encrypted and do not leave the VPN tunnel.
This is the right answer. ProtonVPN does not have a public DNS (encrypted or otherwise) for people to use outside of their VPN. As long as you not changing the DNS to a private DNS (or your browsing is forcing its DNS) you would be using Protons DNS when using their VPN service.
