Proton VPN Kill Switch does not work correctly with multiple users on Win 11

We have three different users on Win 11. Only my profile has Proton VPN connected. I use advanced kill switch which should block all the connections without VPN.

When other persons log in to their account, sometimes they don’t have internet connection at all. More often they have internet connection without VPN and when I log in to my account, Proton VPN have switched off and it says something like “connect to the server to get internet connection”. But the connection is still on without the VPN and when I press “connect”, absolutely nothing happens.

Only solution has been restarting the computer. Then when I log in to my account and connect Proton, everything goes like it should and when I disconnect, there is no internet connection at all.

I don’t know how the kill switch should work with multiple users (especially if those others not using VPN), but certainly it is really broken in my profile which should block all the connections without VPN.

Obviously in the future I try to put my log in details to other family member accounts who uses the computer and see what happens, but clearly this is not how kill switch should work.

Edit: And by the way, it is not only kill switch. When I don’t use the switch at all and I log back to my account after someone else has used the computer, Proton VPN either does not connect at all or stays on just one or two minutes. This problem will go away too when I just restart the computer so somehow this multiple user set up just seems hard to handle for Proton.

Have you asked proton support about this? If not please do so first.

Secondly, I believe proton vpn is installed on system level meaning it might run for all accounts. A computer with multiple users that all login to their own proton account might not be possible; just be a technical limitation because of process sharing.

Lastly, if you want a reliable killswitch you should do this on router level.

Or use IVPN or Mullvad. Their implementation has always been more robust in my view and experience.

It is installed on system level. Others aren’t just logged in. Plan is to log them in with my Proton VPN account to prevent this problem.

Well I guess Proton should have reliable Kill Switch because they have that kind of feature in their VPN. Atleast there are not warning sign which says that their Kill Switch is not reliable.

Considering their false marketing about Kill Switch for examble, I think it is better to see if other people have same problems which would not surprise at all.

If I wouldn’t have Proton Unlimited paid for almost three years advance, then I would have changed my VPN provider to Mullvad. This is Proton’s strenght. People (me included) won’t easily change the entire eco system if there are problems with some products. Obviously this is pretty big problem. Like yesterday I was many hours without VPN because I did not notice that it had gone off. Still, I won’t abandon everything just because of this but Proton is definately less trustworthy with these flaws, false marketing, Meet situation etc than it was when I started using it like two years ago.

There are other threads on the forum about this you can find. The conclusion is that none of them are quite reliable.

This is misguided. The first step to any issue with a third party product should be to reach out to their support.

I don’t think it’s misguided.

Please refer to this thread: How should we handle Proton's misleading marketing?

What do you mean “with a third party product”?Proton is always installed on third party product so there are no issues that does not involve third party product.

Yeah, good thread and I have read it. Didn’t know if I should just post there. Felt somehow offtopic.

I think it is good to put these out in the open. Proton is lying publicly about Mac case and not taking responsibility so it would be surprise if they do anything but blame Windows and multiple profiles here. Problem is that this is just normal Windows use. If it works badly, it is just Proton’s fault, not third or fourth party. But yes, I will write to them and add pictures etc.

I mean if you’re using a product you didn’t make (i.e., a third party), ask that product’s support first. They should have the best access and answers. If they fail to provide proper customer service that’s when you should look to other sources. Otherwise users often misdiagnose their own issues and community members spend a lot of time troubleshooting the wrong problem.
