Adguard VPN kill switch issue

Hi all

I bought 5 year package of Adguard VPN because it was very cheap, but I think I am already regretting it.

It has so called kill switch, and my expectation was, VPN must be active at all times, and when it is not, it should cut the connection, right? But this VPN disconnects itself as soon as I lock my Windows and doesn’t kill any connections.

I did a simple test. I executed ping google.com -t while VPN was active, I let it run for 30-40 seconds then locked the Windows. Waited 2-3 minutes and then logged in. VPN was disconnected and as soon as I logged in it tried to connect again, but my ping commands never interrupted.

Anyone else encountered this issue? There are other issues with their DNS app too but this most important one. No other VPN app acted like this apart from Adguard. Then this is the first VPN app that disconnects on Windows lock.

I got an official reply from Adguard support team, which confused me even more. Is my knowledge about the kill switch features and disconnections are wrong? All other VPNs that I used have the same feature and acting as I expected. They keep connected all the time, even I lock my Windows, and if there is a disconnection or reconnection, they simply cut all the network activities until traffic goes through the VPN again. But with Adguard it is different. My connections are never getting dropped.

Official support responses;

Why does it need to restart VPN tunnel if connection is not getting interrupted?

It is wimply the way AdGuard VPN works.

Also, even in case of reconnection, it should drop existing connections, right?

We do not understand.

AdGuard VPN should not drop a connection, it recreates a VPN tunnel when device is unlocked so it reestablishes connection. It is as if you’ve switched from one VPN location to another, making it another VPN tunnel in the same session.

When kill switch is active, it must drop all the connections and establish new connections, and when it is not active, it shouldn’t allow any connections.

Kill switch doesn’t work that way. It stops traffic from going through when you have VPN enabled and no connection. However, if you disable VPN yourself, it is not considered as no connection and should not prevent you from reaching anywhere. App knows if connection drop was internal or external.

Ahhhh I kind of get their logic, that means they don’t have a proper Kill Switch implementation. You can ask for a refund now :rofl:

Sadly I bought it via Stacksocial :frowning:

Oh, their browser extension is leaking my real IPv6 address too.
