Proton Mail launched Desktop app (Beta)

Exciting app. I hope they will integrate the drive in the future.

Haters gonna hate.
“Proton should not put early access behind pricing” or “Proton should make the bridge free etc.” Guys, proton is not a charity, the need to earn money.

Actually i rather see them split up the calendar and email app. Just a separate app for each service.

My issue is with their pricing model is not the price. The unlimited, family, and visionary plans are extremely reasonably priced. My issue is the pricing model.

Example: The visionary plan has reopened but at $10 more a month than before and don’t forget to subscribe before Jan 4th or you’ve missed the boat and we might never offer 6tb again.

Vendor plans I prefer and have subscribed to in the past:

  • Mullvad: The price is the price
  • Skiff: Flat transparent monthly/yearly pricing
  • Apple: Again, a flat rate each month. Need 6tb?, subscribe to the 6tb plan. If you delete data and now only need 2tb, feel free to reduce your plan dynamically.

Whereas with proton, you need to get in on the deal early for “fear of missing out”. If I need 6tb today but 2tb in a year, I can’t give up my ViSiOnArY status. I might not be able to subscribe for 6tb again.

Proton’s prices are very reasonable. It’s just the way they go about it that leaves a bad taste in my mouth and makes it hard for me to trust them. Kinda reminds me of those airline and hotel loyalty programs in a way.

Unfortunately thats the pricing model that works and pays bills.

Again, think of it as subsidizing the free tier.

Again, the issue is not the price. It’s the way in which it is implemented that is scummy. Free tiers of service are not unique to Proton.

Update: I’m a standard Proton Unlimited user, and it’s working just fine for me. Looks like they’re (silently?) lifted the Visionary restriction.

Yes, from the page they updated it to “The beta version of the Proton Mail desktop app is restricted to anyone with a paid Proton Mail plan.”

They have run out of “visionaries” willing to pay as much as $40/month for a service they are now telling customers you can get for $4/month. Im glad the price is more reasonable but it just highlights how obnoxious Proton has become with hiding popular features behind excessively expensive bundles.

Alpha/beta releases aren’t the same as early access. Honestly, seems like any unnecessary bone to pick. Let the 40$/month users report the obvious bugs, have them fixed, and get a more stable product after a little bit. Till then, Thunderbird and bridge are solid enough.

I think they just released it for linux. There’s now a deb/rpm download link here
