Wondering whats the best setup to have for social media signup and posting.
How would it be safe to sign up on social media account?
Is it better to use a reputable VPN or Orbot VPN when signing up?
Using Orbot for full tor usage on mobile enough to stay anonymous when using the application or is a reputable VPN enough
Privacy and social media can’t happen at the same time no matter if you use a VPN. They’ll still try to get as much data from your browsing activity.
Also, pretty sure you can’t use the Tor network to sign up for social media as they won’t allow it and want to ensure legitimate accounts by real people and not abuse with new account creations.
With a VPN - all you’re doing is ensuring your ISP doesn’t see where you’re browsing online.
There is no real “private set up” if you ask me.
Depends on the type of social media. The mainstream facebook, x, linkedin or whatever most definitely doesn’t allow account creation with tor. Even if they initially allow it, eventually the account would be locked and they’ll ask for id to prove your identity thus turning the whole privacy/anonymity via initially registering using tor moot. Reddit are even worse, allow account creation, posting and whatnot via tor and vpn then shadowban you making your post an echo chamber viewable only by you alone.
Some niche social media like mastodon aren’t that restrictive but that also depends on individual server admins.
I would think this depends on how interactive you need to be. If all you want to do is browse, using frontends with no account, is probably going to fit most threat models.
Facebook Containers extension in Firefox (desktop only) will auto put Facebook in a container automatically, as well as Facebook objects in other sites (for example, the like button). Granted, unless using a VPN. It’s not a perfect solution, but at least it gives some isolation.
The built in containers feature of Firefox also works, and I love the feature, but it doesn’t do the same level of isolation. Also, it is built by Mozilla, so you aren’t trusting another 3rd party you haven’t already given your trust to.
Sooner or later your account with VPN will be blocked or instantly shadow banned.
It’s not possible.
The Only social media which works is the Fediverse with Mastodons.
There are even Mastodon Servers which you can access via their For Hidden Service like infosec.exchange
Don’t waste your time.
Just read a book or pirate a film or e-book.
Social Media is literally just bad for your mental health.
Overstimulation and all the bullshit there.
I know what I am speaking off.
It’s one of the worst developments for our societies.
I don’t recommend using a vpn for social media like Instagram. I actually got banned for suspicious activity for quite some time. I recommend using a brower to use social media with a seperate social media profile. Every chromium browser and Firefox support seperate profiles. However I can’t figure out what mobile browsers have seperate profiles except for iOS Safari which is kind of ironic.
I’ve been on Reddit and Twitter for years behind a vpn. Never been banned for it.
I very much enjoy social media. I feels great to teach a privacy noob something that helps them along in their privacy journey. There are joke communities on Lemmy that are very funny. Having a good laugh is great for mental health.
All depends on how one uses social media.
Having said that, I have seen the toxic side of social media and the grief some demographics receive just for being themselves.
It’s true that it all depends in the end.
The algorithms are still trying to waste as much time from you as possible.
Lemmy is fine.
Fediverse is an alternative
