Hey I have been trying to find a solution to this one for a while. Proton has an option where for example you can be notified via the recovery email that you have mail or not. My memory is that it doesn’t even show the proton username, certainly no message content.
I have a rarely used email address that I use that can be set up to forward incoming mail. However all of the email alias services including simplelogin seem to forward on the full mail and not have any option to send a custom mail devoid of information when mail is forwarded to that address. For clarity I’m looking to have a setup where emails to foo@mail.com forward to alias@alias.com and my main mailbox me@protonmail.com just gets a message from alias@alias.com with a Generic “Message received” body that would be set by me, with no reference to foo@mail.com or the body of the forwarded message.
Does anyone know any aliasing services that would support this?
Assuming the main concern you have is you don’t want any of the details of the forwarded email to be stored in plaintext in your regular mailbox, you can kind of get what you want with SimpleLogin by having it encrypt the emails it forwards with PGP. This can include the subject, you can set a custom subject to show in plaintext in your inbox like “New email forwarded” and then you’ll only see the real subject if you decrypt the email. You can also mask the sender.
I think this (or the equivalent on another service) will be your only option because by definition email forwarding services forward the email, they don’t store copies, so they’re not going to just send you a notification that you received a mail you won’t be able to access.
I thought of that but unfortunately with simplelogin and Addy.io it sends over the email address itself which I also don’t want to be stored. I wish that instead of keeping the email address they could do something like encrypt everything as an attachment vs keeping the sender info in the header.
I just don’t want this email address tied to my main email account in any way but I would like to get a custom notification sent to my main email address that alerts me. I was hoping there was a way I could do this without scripting something or leaving open a mail client all the time as I only get a few emails a year on this address.
Yeah there are options to disable that at least in SimpleLogin. It will instead use a pseudonymous address completely unidentifiable as the true sender.
I think the ones that control it are “Sender Address Format” (select “No name (i.e. only reverse alias)”), enabling “Replace Reverse Alias”, and disabling “Include sender address in reverse-alias”.
Edit: Also I think changing this only applies to senders you haven’t received from yet. If you want it to apply to existing known senders you have to go to the alias itself, select “Contacts”, and delete the contact entry for the sender you want to hide. Then it will start hiding upon the next email you receive from them.
Looks like PGP is only available on premium plans with Simplelogin I don’t want to use my paid simplelogin plan for this as I don’t want to change all the global settings for this.
It looks like there are no addy.io settings to to mask the sender like this and also despite saying it can encrypt the subject dosen’t look like that is happening and another option “replace subject name” is behind paywall.
