Open-Source & Self-Hosted Web Analytics

I would like to expand the discussion on privacy and security to web analytics, more specifically self-hosted and open-source analytics tools. I don’t believe all analytics are bad, especially given that each request to a server will provide the server with some information on your device and connection. As someone self-hosting different tools and websites, I do care about getting some information on users visiting my sites, especially to monitor for security purposes, while remaining conscious of the user’s privacy.

I want to get the community’s input on different analytics software that is worthwhile implementing. At the moment I’m looking at https://plausible.io/ and https://www.openwebanalytics.com/ as viable options. I would love to hear if anyone has tried them or has other recommendations for analytics.

We used to use Plausible, and while we don’t use any analytics on the main website anymore, it wasn’t for any reasons related to Plausible being bad.

Matrix.org recently began using Plausible for their homepage IIRC.
