Off-grid messaging

(follow up to I'm Getting Into Mesh Networks... (Meshtastic, MeshCore, and Reticulum))

any one here using a primarily non-internet based messenger with their friends/family on the day to day?
like meshtastic or others like such as meshcore (proprietary) or reticulum?

if so how? did you set up a bunch of nodes yourself? are your friends nerds who each set up their own? etc…

or are these tools a pipe dream unless you’re in highly localized areas such as rural towns or festivals?

There is a DWeb chapter in my local area, but I no longer attend any of their events.

Isn’t meshtastic unencrypted and node relayed? SF11 is roughly 1kbps and It’d be silly to even attempt to overlay a Signal app over it.

there are public channels without encryption, private channels with psk encryption, and 1:1 node messaging with public/private key encryption

signing was also merged recently and should be in the next alpha firmware: Packet Signing via XEdDSA by jp-bennett · Pull Request #10478 · meshtastic/firmware · GitHub

nodes can still relay messages for channels they do not have keys for

you can also change your frequency preset and your frequency slot if you want less congestion for your channels if your area is busy

ie. you can have it as a completely public radio, a completely private network, or something in between, just all depends on how you configure it

is it Signal-grade? no. but it isn’t completely insecure either.

i haven’t heard of anyone using anything like this before. festivals are a great way to use that though.
