I don’t know what else I can say that the article doesn’t explain. It’s literally in the name of the abbreviated name of what they’re talking about.
Perhaps you can use AI to reword the article for a better explanation.
Unlike @JG I will attempt to be helpful and explain it to you, even though I myself am a bit confused. I am just a lay person.
From what I can understand in the article, which is quite little, membership just refers to the fact that something was part of (AKA a member of) the AI’s training data.
If we use Alice’s medical data to train an AI, but not Bob’s medical data, then Alice’s medical data is a member of the AI’s training data and Bob’s is a non-member. The article says that we can infer if whatever data is a member or not by seeing how the AI responds to us, which could result in invasions of privacy.
